Bells - The voice of the Dom Tower

Halfway up the Dom Tower there are fourteen bells. Six of them were founded by Geert van Wou in 1505 and can still be heard on Sundays, religious holidays and special occasions. They are the voice of the Dom Tower, and reminded Utrecht's residents of the presence of the church and the importance of religious faith. Listening to the ringing of the bells still leaves a very deep impression.

Although most church bells today are rung mechanically, those in the Dom Tower are still rung by hand in the so-called 'Ringing Attic'. It is a tough job, because it requires an impressive 32,000 kg of bronze to be set into motion using ropes. Since 1979, this task has been in the expert hands of the  Utrecht Bellringers Guild.
